A plasterer has a range of skills so it's important to find a plasterer who is right for your needs. A plasterer can specialise in the following areas:
- Solid plastering - applying wet finishes to surfaces and putting protective coverings like pebble-dashing on external walls
- Fibrous plastering - creating ornamental plasterwork, such as ceiling roses, cornices, columns and architraves, using a mixture of plaster and short fibres shaped with moulds and casts
- Dry lining (dot and dabbing) - fixing internal plasterboard or wallboard partitions by fastening them together on a timber or metal frame ready for decorating.
Find a plasterer - top tips
When looking to find a plasterer it's important you select the plasterer you are happiest with. Take your time, don't rush into choosing your plasterer - it's important you get it right. Plastering can take time, creates lots of mess and will create the ultimate finish for your walls. To find reputable plasterers:
- Search on JuggleFrogs for local plasterers
- Ask local friends and family for recommendations
- Ask neighbours for plasterer recommendations
Hiring a plasterer
There are several steps to consider when hiring a plasterer:
- Ensure the company is reputable - check references
- Remember the cheapest price does not always equal best value and most expensive does not mean best quality
- Be clear about the plastering work needed - take care to include enough detail in your written job requirement so that each tradesperson starts with a good understanding of your needs. This is essential if you are to get comparable quotations
- Get multiple quotations in writing from at least 3 plasterers - breaking down labour and material costs and where possible go for a fixed price
- If your plasterer is a member of a Trade Association then phone the scheme to check and find out what checks the Builder's Trade Association has in place
Ask as many questions as you need - a good plasterer will be happy to spend time with you and answer all of your questions. They should also be able to give you useful ideas and advice on the types of plaster to use.
Questions to ask potential plasterer:
- When can they do the plastering?
- How much is it inc VAT?
- What qualifications have they got?
- How long have they been in business?
- Is the plastering work guaranteed?
- How long will the plastering take?
- Will they clear away rubbish and clear up mess made?
- If additional costs accrue during works, how will they be calculated?
- Do they have public liability and employers liability insurance?
Be sure to weigh up the benefits of working with one plasterer over another plasterer. If they offer more experience, or proof that they can do the job you want with the quality of workmanship you require, it might be worth paying those extra few pounds or waiting longer for them to start the plastering works.
