The other day I stumbled across an article about Blue Forest. When I was young I always wanted to have a tree house and now it seems there are tree houses for adults too! Gone are the days when only kids can have fun hanging around in trees – if only I had a tree big enough!

Blue Forest’s managing director Andy Payne says, “We are often told that we must have the perfect job, building tree houses for a living! Well, it’s absolutely true! It doesn’t get much better than being outdoors, up a tree in some of the most beautiful parts of the world, creating the most exclusive tree houses around.” Having just completed their first £100K+ tree house Andy confesses “The bread and butter of the company is providing big toys for those lucky enough to afford them.”

Where did the idea for adult Tree House start?

Andy was born and brought up in Kenya where his love affair for tree houses began. One of his first projects was helping a friend who runs a conservation NGO called ASSETS in the design and construction of eco-tourism attractions. Work included a tree platform in the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and a 200m suspended walkway through the mangroves at nearby Mida Creek. These attractions help raise money to support the work of ASSETS, and were sponsored by the UNDP.

After working in Kenya, Andy moved to Japan where he gained several years experience in the construction of timber frame buildings. However, it was when he built tree houses in Japan that he really carved out a vocation. “As soon as people saw a tree house I had built they would want one of their own” recalls Andy.

How are the Blue Forest tree houses constructed?

Each Tree House is individually crafted and finished to the highest standard by a team of BlueForest craftsmen (the average tree house takes about 3 weeks to build). Simon Payne, who works with his brother Andy in their Blue Forest tree house office, explains about the building process. “The size of the tree available is not a limiting factor, as we often build on stilts to support the weight of the structure, whilst still incorporating smaller trees into the design. As each Blue Forest tree house is unique, we do not have a set price list. Prices generally start from around £12,000 inclusive of VAT and the sky is the limit.”

With regard to the future Simon explains that BlueForest has only just started to realise the huge potential that exists in the tree house market. “We are approached on a daily basis by people all over the world interested in creating something out of the ordinary, and in particular something environmentally friendly.” Not wanting to be left out of the action, Blue Forest have plans to create a chain of their own luxury 5 star Tree House Lodges to be built and operated to provide a sustainable source of income for the communities in which they are situated, the first two lodges are to be built in Sri Lanka shortly.

So if you thought tree houses were just for kids, then think again – Blue Forest have designed and produced these amazing trees house for adults too, now we just need a big enough garden!
