Kitchen cupboards
The actual cupboard part of a kitchen unit excluding doors and drawers is known as the carcass - the barebones of the kitchen if you like, that will make up the basic layout of the room and provide storage.
If you are having a bespoke kitchen then the carcasses will be custom made to fit your space. If you are on a tight budget however it is more likely that you are considering buying an off the shelf kitchen, in which case you will need to give careful consideration to how standard sized units will fit in and work with your space.
The majority of mass-produced kitchen carcasses are made for chipboard, plywood or MdF with a standard melamine finish but solid wood is also an option.

Kitchen drawers
Kitchen drawers are becoming deeper and longer with subdivided inserts to take packets, jars, knives and tin foil. They often feature a smaller drawer inside. Drawers that fully extend are great as you can see every last thing lurking in the back of them. Soft - and self-closing mechanisms make drawers glide smoothly and effortlessly shut, meaning less wear and tear in the long run.
